Acupuncture is an ancient form of natural healing
that has been in use for more than 2,000 years.
Treatment
with acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific
points along pathways of energy flow known as “meridians.” The
stimulation of these selected treatment points reestablishes balance
and unblocks the flow of energy in the body, restoring function and
relieving discomfort and pain.
Acupuncture needles are very fine and the
insertion is virtually painless. Once the needles are in, they are
gently stimulated to promote energy movement. Sensations associated
with this stimulation may include a slight tingling or distension for
a few moments. The needles are then left in place for 15-30 minutes,
during which time many people experience deep relaxation or even fall
asleep.
Acupuncture has been
found effective in treating a wide range of conditions, from anxiety and other stress syndromes to
musculoskeletal pain and injury. The World Health Organization
advocates the use of acupuncture in the treatment of over 40
conditions.
